Columbia Riverkeeper is closely monitoring the Nestle Corporation's plans to tap into a Columbia River Gorge spring for a new water bottling plant in Cascade Locks, Oregon.

Currently, Nestle is asking the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) to transfer its water rights for Oxbow Springs to the City of Cascade Locks. In turn, the bottling company would then purchase spring water from the City.

Under this scenario, Nestle could use up to 300 gallons per minute of spring water. ODFW currently uses Oxbow Springs water for its Cascade Locks fish hatchery. Under Nestle's proposal, ODFW would replace Oxbow Springs water at its hatchery with well water.

Nestle is currently testing well water to assess whether it can be used at the ODFW hatchery as a replacement to spring water.
