Houston-based company NEXT Renewable Fuels (NEXT) wants to build a non-conventional diesel refinery in the Columbia River Estuary near Clatskanie, Oregon. The second largest of its kind in the nation, the NEXT refinery’s energy-intensive process to create alternative fuels would consume as much fracked gas as the City of Eugene, and is permitted to emit 1 million tons of greenhouse gasses per year. The NEXT refinery also is proposed in an unstable wetland, where it would discharge harmful pollution during construction and operation, harm sensitive fish and wildlife habitat, create conditions for a catastrophic spill, and negatively impact local family farms.

Join our next Voices for the West webinar on September 3 at 12 p.m. for a discussion with Audrey Leonard, Staff Attorney at Columbia Riverkeeper, and Andrew Missel, Staff Attorney at Advocates for the West, on our challenges to this misguided proposal.

Watch a short video about the NEXT proposal.
