Urge Washington lawmakers to reverse the decision to Defund Columbia River Gorge Commission
Last weekend, in a stunning act of recklessness, the Washington State House of Representatives voted to eliminate all funding for the Columbia River Gorge Commission.
The Columbia River Gorge Commission, along with the U.S. Forest Service, oversees the protection and enhancement of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Since its creation in 1987, the Gorge Commission has been the frontline defense against unchecked development and environmental threats. It advances conservation initiatives for land and wildlife, preserves Tribal cultural resources, strengthens climate resilience strategies, and supports prosperous economies within Gorge communities.
But without its funding in the Washington State 2025-2027 budget, the Gorge Commission’s ability to protect the Gorge would be devastated. While state funding is tight, the Gorge Commission’s budget is only 0.0063% of the state budget.
We’re reaching out to ask for your support in urging Washington lawmakers to reverse this decision. The stakes are high—if this cut stands, it will significantly undermine the Scenic Area Act and the bi-state agreement that has successfully protected the Gorge from unchecked development for nearly 40 years.
The time to protect the Gorge is now—before it’s too late. Ask your representatives to restore the funding for the Columbia River Gorge Commission.
