SUMMARY:Virtual Public Meeting: Support New Oregon Dept. of Energy Rule
DESCRIPTION:On May 15\, 2026\, the Energy Facility Siting Council (EFSC) will consider whether to move a new rule update forward proposed by the Oregon Dept. of Energy (ODOE). The new rule proposes changes and fee increases for truck and rail carriers of radioactive material through the state. Fee increases would support emergency preparedness response. \nWhy: Columbia Riverkeeper actively participated in the Rulemaking Advisory Committee (RAC)\, one of the only representatives not associated with the trucking or rail industry\, where we advocated for increased reporting\, fees on rail carriers\, and increased Tribal notification. Read our comments here. \nOverall\, we are very supportive of ODOE’s fee increase and of the inclusion of rail carriers\, despite industry pushback. Shipments of nuclear waste from the Hanford Nuclear Site are expected to increase exponentially as tank operations advance. Somewhere between 60 to 110 shipments per year are expected to originate just from the 200 West project alone. In comparison\, from 2023 to 2024\, the Oregon Dept. of Transportation reported a total of 349 radioactive shipments through the state. Read the draft rule\, RAC comments\, and ODOE responses here. \nThere will be an opportunity for public comment at the May 15 virtual meeting. Join us in supporting ODOE’s proposed rule. If EFSC moves the rule forward\, there will be a 49-day public comment period and public hearing. \nWhen: Friday\, May 15\, 2026 @ 8:30 a.m. PDT \nOnline: Join on your computer\, mobile app or room device \nRSVP: Not required  \nClick here to join the meeting via Webex

SUMMARY:Invitation to Visit Pushpum
DESCRIPTION:Join us May 8 for a rare opportunity to see the site of the proposed Goldendale Pumped Storage development that threatens to destroy sacred Tribal lands \nKnown to the Yakama Nation as “mother of all roots\,” Pushpum is a sacred site for Yakama Nation ceremonies\, legends\, and gathering of traditional roots and medicines. Rye Development proposes to permanently destroy Pushpum by building the Goldendale Pumped Storage development\, the largest such development proposal in the Pacific Northwest. \nThe Washington Department of Ecology and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) both concluded that the development of Goldendale Pumped Storage would have “unique significant and unavoidable adverse impacts on Tribal communities and members.” Yet they still recommended that the development move forward. FERC Commissioners approved the final license for the development in January 2026\, though opposition continues. \nNow\, for the first time\, Yakama Nation has secured landowner approval to hold an event near the proposed pumped-storage site. Yakama Nation\, led by members of the Rock Creek Band\, is leading a public event on Friday\, May 8 that will include speakers and ceremonies. \nWHERE: 1140 Goldendale Goodnoe Hills Road #1032\, Goldendale\, WA 98620 \nWHEN: Friday\, May 8\, 2026\, from 10:30 a.m. to approximately 2:30 p.m.  \nAGENDA:  \n\n10:30 a.m. Invocation and welcome\n11:00 a.m. Elected officials and cultural leader speakers\n12:00 p.m. Complimentary salmon lunch with pre-registration via Eventbrite\n1:00 p.m. Cultural and traditional tribal social dances\n2:30 p.m. Event concludes\n\nREGISTRATION:  \n\nPlease register using this Eventbrite link.

SUMMARY:Rumble on the River #30
DESCRIPTION:Rumble #30: What is the Deal with Data Centers – Episode 2\n \nLike the springtime emergence of invasive plants\, data centers appear to be cropping up everywhere. Aside from providing limited long-term employment opportunities and receiving tax breaks\, data centers demand extreme amounts of water\, energy and land. SUMMARY:Wyden Town Hall - Hood River County 3/31 at 4 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Senator Ron Wyden is hosting a town hall in Hood River County on March 31\nHave you heard about the proposed public-land giveaway of 150 acres in the Mount Hood National Forest? Now is your chance to urge Senator Wyden to oppose this public land giveaway. \n\nWhat: Wyden Town Hall – Hood River County\nWhen: March 31\, 2026 at 4 p.m.\nWhere: Hood River Valley High School 1220 Indian Creek Rd.\, Hood River\, OR\nWhy: Tell Senator Wyden: No Mt. Hood public land giveaway to benefit data centers\n\nLearn more about the issue here. \nColumbia Riverkeeper is part of a coalition of nonprofits who are calling on Senator Ron Wyden to oppose HR 655\, a bill that would transfer roughly 150 acres of public land from the Mount Hood National Forest to the City of The Dalles\, where data centers are causing energy and water demands to skyrocket. \nHR 655 passed in the House of Representatives in December\, and is now before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee\, where Senator Wyden is a committee member. \nSenator Wyden needs to hear from you to stop this public-land giveaway designed to skirt critical environmental and stakeholder engagement laws. \nNOTE: For everyone’s security\, backpacks and large bags will not be allowed in the town halls. Similar to major sporting events\, there is a clear bag policy for town halls\, allowing only clear bags (max 12″x 6″x12″)\, one-gallon clear plastic bags\, or small clutches (max 4.5″x 6.5″)\, plus essential items like medical bags or infant necessities\, with no storage for disallowed bags. Backpacks and non-clear bags are prohibited\, though medical/infant needs have exceptions. Doors will open 30 minutes before the town hall start time for attendees.

SUMMARY:Come Celebrate! DEQ Cancels Zenith Hearings!
DESCRIPTION:Big news: you spoke up and it worked! The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) just paused the air permitting process for Zenith Energy and canceled two public hearings scheduled for Nov. 19 and Dec. 4.\n  \nThe change in plans is due to findings from DEQ’s unannounced inspection of Zenith’s facility on Nov. 13. The DEQ’s inspection focused on the McCall Oil dock\, which Zenith illegally incorporated in 2021 to expand its operations—one of Zenith’s Legacy of Violations and Lies. According to an Oregonian article\, the DEQ’s Air Quality Permit Manager Lisa Ball explained the inspection was prompted by questions from community members about Zenith’s operations that the DEQ couldn’t answer. Ball stated\, “This is a complete result of the public process. We’re very proud of our community for bringing questions up that pushed us to investigate further.” \n  \nIn the News:\nAdvocates “Cautiously Optimistic” About DEQ Decision to Delay Zenith Air Quality Permit\, Portland Mercury\, November 14\, 2024 \nState puts hold on Zenith Energy’s controversial air permit process in surprise move\, Oregonian\, November 14\, 2024\n \nThis is not the end of the Zenith saga\, but is a clear sign that we have the attention of regulators.\n\n \nCome Celebrate \nThink you have nothing to do on 11/19 since the hearing was canceled? Think again! Join us for “Zenith On The Ropes\,” a moment to come together\, take a deep breath\, and celebrate.  \nTuesday\, November 19th AT 6:00 p.m.\n350PDX Workspace\, 3639 N Mississippi Avenue MAP \nMusic.
