Riverkeeper presents coal export threat to 200 in Vancouver

The Columbian published a story on Columbia Riverkeeper's presentation to 200 at the Vancouver Rotary, followed by a coal proponent presentation by Tim Smith. "Business leaders in Vancouver has serious concerns about dirty coal," Riverkeeper's Brett VandenHeuvel stated. Vancouver will suffer the brunt of the dirty coal trains. Coal companies have proposals that would send up to 52 trains per day (26 full and 26 empty) through Vancouver. Considering the huge public health, environmental, and economic impacts, the coal proponent's explanation of the local benefits was not convincing. The Columbian noted:

"One audience member questioned how much benefit Clark County would directly reap in exchange for the impact it would bear. Smith said he couldn't answer that question at this point, but the opportunity is worth pursuing for the region as a whole."
