Message Delivered: No Coal Here

Two weeks, four public hearings, one Columbia River, thousands of engaged citizens opposed to coal export. The headline of OPB's coverage of the hearing says it all: Coal Export Opponents Dominate at Vancouver Hearing. We did. We were also the majority at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality coal hearings in Clatskanie and Portland.

Vancouver Hearing

Over a thousand folks came out to Clark College on December 12th to show their opposition to the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal, which would bring dirty coal through the Northwest on its way to Asia. If approved, the Gateway Pacific Terminal north of  Bellingham would be the largest coal export terminal in the United States.

"There’s the noise, the dust, the impact on rail crossings, the harm to our downtown, and the almost constant reminder that we’d be shipping millions of tons of pollution overseas that will come back to hurt us," commeted Rick Marshall, Camas real estate developer who attended the public hearing in Vancouver. “It is not what our community needs."

DEQ HEARINGS ON AMBRE'S MORROW PACIFIC PROJECT (Dec 4th, 5th, and 6th)

Portland Hearing

Over 800 Northwest residents, the majority opposed to Ambre Energy's proposed Morrow Pacific Coal Export Project, packed Portland's Ambridge Event Center on December 6th to let DEQ know we want clean energy solutions, not dirty coal. Concerned citizens asked hard-hitting questions, gave powerful testimony, and strongly urged DEQ to deny Ambre the requested permits for their proposed project. Shipping coal through the Northwest will only bring about unnecessary harm to our health, our communities, and our environment. Keep the coal where it belongs, in the ground.
