I am now 60 years old, and it has been my privilege and pleasure to have lived along two great American rivers. First, the Hudson River, on which I have sailed many times, and now on the mighty Columbia River, which, along with the Gorge, is quite rightly the watery jewel of the American West. Sharing a beautiful summer evening sail with Pete Seeger on The Wood Guthrie, sister ship to The Clearwater, is just one of many special memories of my Hudson River days.
Like many of my generation, I have watched with horror as our environment has been degraded by short-term profiteering and the encroachment of industry and commercialism on our most precious American natural vistas. Sometimes it seems too much to bear. What are we leaving our children? Obviously, in too many cases, much less that was our good fortune to enjoy.
For the past several years, it has been my ambition to photograph as much of the American West as I can, with a view towards exhibiting the truest beauty of nature and inspiring others to care for what has been given us. For those of us who live here, our American West is most truly a gift to us from the divine. We must care for this precious gift. This brief slideshow should serve as an introduction to a full-length version currently in progress, and which I am hoping to bring to completion later this year. What a pleasure to photograph such a beautiful river and beautiful land. I hope you enjoy this slideshow as well.
