Kalama Washington residents against methanol
July Member Spotlight: The Town of Kalama, Washington

By Jasmine Zimmer-Stucky, Senior Organizer

This month, our member spotlight shines on the town of Kalama, Washington. Columbia Riverkeeeper works closely with dozens of community members in Kalama who are concerned about the proposed methanol refinery on the Columbia River. If built, Kalama’s small town charm could lose out to the world’s largest methanol refinery.

Kalama residents are courageous and dedicated to the protection of the Columbia and their community. Word about the proposed methanol refinery has traveled fast because of the hard work of a few dozen folks. There’s been a booth at the Kalama fair and parade, volunteer door belling days,  public testimony at every Port of Kalama meeting, and multiple community events all fueled by volunteer power. Most Wednesday mornings, sign waving “greeters” pass out literature to the public at the town’s busiest four-way intersection (there are no stop lights in Kalama).

Earlier this month, Columbia Riverkepeer released a White Paper  on the proposed methanol refinery. The White Paper is one of many ways that we work with the community to support their campaign.
