+1 reason to oppose the Kalama methanol refinery

Join the call for clean air, healthy salmon runs, a stable climate, and an end to plastics pollution.

Happy Earth Month

Devastating images of plastic garbage floating in the ocean, or birds mistaking bottle caps for food, make me sick. Many people associate Earth Month with cleaning up plastics and other trash along our rivers and ocean beaches. This month, my mind is on the building blocks of plastics—and empowering people to stop a major climate polluter on the Columbia.

Did you know that the world’s largest fracked gas-to-methanol refinery, proposed along the Columbia River in Kalama, WA, would feed the plastics industry? The refinery would consume massive amounts of fracked gas to create liquid methanol, a feedstock for plastics. The company has also proposed burning the methanol as a fuel in Asia.

If you want to protect our climate and think the world has enough climate and plastics pollution, join with over 30,000 people who have already spoken up to protect the Columbia and our climate from a massive refinery.

April is Earth Month—a great time to tell Washington’s Governor Inslee what you think about the world’s largest methanol refinery. Our goal: 5,000 new voices opposed to the Kalama methanol refinery. Sign this letter and post this link on Facebook asking your friends to take action.

By 2025, the Kalama methanol refinery would be Washington’s number one cause  of greenhouse gas pollution. And for what? Northwest Innovation Works will export methanol to China to make plastics.
