It’s Happening! Portland City Council To Vote On Fossil Fuel Ordinance this Wednesday, August 24

On Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at 2 p.m. the Portland City Council will vote on Portland’s Fossil Fuel Terminal Zoning Amendments (FFTZA)—an ordinance that would protect Portland communities from harmful pollution and safety risks from facilities like oil train terminals. The vote comes after years of delays by the fossil fuel industry and their allies.

Our voices came through loud and clear during the City’s June hearing on the ordinance. Oral testimony was 100% in favor of banning new large fossil fuel facilities, with no expansions allowed.

  • Attend the Portland City Council’s vote on August 24, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Portland City Hall, 1221 SW 4th. (Public comment is closed, so we will be there to show support.)

The City’s vote on this policy is an important first step to protect the health, safety, and climate of Portland’s residents by banning new or expanded fossil fuel terminals. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision undermining federal action to limit climate-changing pollution, local actions are all the more important.

Many commenters expressed concern about existing fuel storage and other flammable materials stored on Portland’s liquefiable soils near vulnerable Portland communities. In coming months, we will continue to advocate for the City to take action to reduce these risks, as well.
