Coal Spills Exposed

New tests show that coal is already polluting the Columbia River, and it could get a lot worse. Huge coal export terminals, if approved, would add up to 30 full coal trains per day through Columbia River communities. Monitoring efforts by Riverkeeper and partners at the Sierra Club and Friends of the Columbia Gorge discovered coal spilled at dozens of locations near rail lines running through the Gorge. Coal export proposals, if approved, would significantly increase coal train traffic in the Gorge, allowing more coal dust to threaten our river, our health, and our communities.

Riverkeeper Brett took KGW News out on the river to show them what we've found. See the KGW News story.

A KOMO News report reveals that coal has also been found in Puget Sound.
