June Member Spotlight: Dave Berger

Dave Berger. Klickitat County, WA – Dave learned what the Lorax meant when it proclaimed “I speak for the trees” from his granddaughter Milena. Dave has dedicated his life to speaking for the trees and the Columbia River. He is entering his seventh year as a volunteer in the Water Quality Monitoring program, monitoring sites on both the Columbia and the Klickitat Rivers.

Dave with his granddaughter, Milena, and their friend Monk.

Dave’s efforts to protect the Columbia River has supported nearly every aspect of Columbia Riverkeeper’s work. He has testified at public hearings regarding coal, oil, nuclear and toxic issues. He’s volunteered to staff informational tables at events with Columbia Riverkeeper, participated in lawsuits to protect salmon and water quality, and advocated for the conservation of wetlands in the Gorge.

Outside of all the critical work Dave does for Columbia Riverkeeper, he lives a wonderful life in Klickitat County with his wife Julie. Together, they tend to their garden, fruit trees, cats, dog and chickens. They love swimming, kayaking (no wonder he is so committed to clean water!), hiking and appreciating the beautiful Columbia River Gorge.

Folks like Dave keep the wheels turning at Columbia Riverkeeper and it’s always a pleasure to see him and his tie dye shirts!
