Victory in Vancouver: Celebrate with us on April 5

The Tesoro Savage oil terminal is finished. The Governor denied it; the Port ended its lease, and the community is ready to move on. Join us on April 5th to celebrate this and other victories over oil and coal pollution!

Victory in Vancouver: Celebrate with us on April 5

Red-shirted oil terminal opponents packed Gaiser Hall in October 2013. Join us in the same room on April 5, 2018 to celebrate grassroots victories over massive oil and coal projects.
"Raise your hand if you oppose this project" October 2013 red-shirted oil terminal opponents packed Gaiser Hall.

You’ve likely heard the good news by now: at the end of February, backers of the Tesoro Savage oil train terminal in Vancouver, Washington, pulled the plug on North America’s largest oil-by-rail project. Your efforts left Tesoro Savage no option. Washington Governor Inslee denied the terminal in late January, and the Port and Tesoro Savage mutually agreed to end the project’s lease in late February. There will be no appeals, no lawsuits, and no more oil train hearings in Vancouver—just a victory party!

  • WHAT: Victory in Vancouver Celebration!
Let's share stories and celebrate the incredible victory over Tesoro Savage and other dangerous, polluting coal and oil projects. While at the party, enjoy a performance by Holcombe Waller, “one of America’s most distinct voices in music theater,” who will perform songs telling the story of the catastrophic 2016 Mosier train derailment and fossil fuel transport through the Columbia River Gorge.
  • WHEN: Thursday, April 5, 2018; doors at 5:30 p.m., program at 6:00 p.m.
  • WHERE: Gaiser Hall, Clark College 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver, WA 98663.
  • HOW: RSVP here!

Path to Victory Paved With Your Energy and Effort

You made this victory possible. You spoke up, attended hearings, knocked on doors, called your neighbors, and contributed funds. You made Tesoro Savage the most opposed project in the history of Washington’s Energy Council, with over 300,000 comments urging denial of the proposal. Along the way, you helped support a Stand Up To Oil campaign that defeated every major oil train proposal in the Northwest. You created a movement to thwart fossil fuels at a time when the Trump administration rolls out the red carpet for Big Coal, Big Oil, and the fracked gas industry.

We salute the incredible work of Columbia River Tribes that stood up to oil-by-rail. Several Tribal Nations presented a rock-solid case to Washington’s Energy Council and the Governor on the significant, dangerous impacts of oil-by-rail. We are honored to work in solidarity with these Tribes to protect the Columbia from the perils of oil-by-rail and other dangerous fossil fuel projects.

We also salute the tireless work of countless people across the Northwest. Community organizers, local leaders, and countless volunteers empowered the public and turned out record-breaking crowds to hearing after hearing, and our attorneys from Earthjustice shined throughout this long fight. I’m also proud of our incredible staff at Columbia Riverkeeper, who were there at the very beginning to strategize and organize with all of our partners.

From business owners to mayors to kids who spoke out passionately about their future, the power of the people prevailed over Big Oil. Savor this sweet victory. And let this victory inspire you to keep fighting to protect our climate and the mighty Columbia River.

Thank Inslee

Finally, join us in thanking Governor Inslee for protecting the Pacific Northwest from one of the most reckless proposals in its history.
