No Puedo Respirar : I Can't Breathe

¡No puedo respirar!

Me he rehusado a leer y escuchar las notas periodísticas en los últimos días. Sin embargo, están en todos lados; escucho los murmullos, aparecen imágenes que rápidamente las retiro fuera del alcance de mi vista.

Hablan de un evento que requiere de mi atención, pero me niego, no quiero escuchar, no quiero ver. Sé lo que está pasando, de lo que están hablando ya lo he visto, vivido un sinfín de veces. Mi mente recuerda esas notas de escenarios ya antes sucedidos en otros lugares, pero… ¿han sido otros lugares?

Me viene a la mente un nombre: Elfego Torres, el mayordomo de una huerta asesinado por Roger Thompson, un hombre blanco dueño de negocios en una disputa llena de odio e insultos raciales por haber estado escuchando música mexicana al término de la jornada de trabajo en The Dalles OR, hace más de 20 años.  

Thompson, que conducía de regreso  a casa, cerca de ½ milla más adelante de donde estaba sonando la música, se sintió molesto por el ruido y decidió a tomar la situación en sus propias manos. Comenzando una discusión y amenazando la vida de Torres, creando una confrontación donde surgieron armas en ambos lados, terminando con la vida de Elfego Torres.

El delito de Elfego, escuchar música a alto volumen. 

El castigo del asesino 18 meses en la cárcel.

Pero él no fue el primero ni ha sido el último Latino/Mexicano que ha perdido la vida por motivos de odio racial ó violencia policiaca, en el área del Columbia Gorge.

Finalmente…

El día 25 de mayo del 2020, Derek Chauvin - un policía blanco de Minneapolis - le causó la muerte a George Floyd, un hombre Negro Americano. Chauvin por el lapso de 8 minutos y 46 segundos mantuvo su rodilla sobre el cuello de George Floyd mientras este en repetidas ocasiones decía:

"No me puedo mover,

Mamá, mamá,

no puedo respirar, 

me duele el estómago, las rodillas, el cuello, 

no puedo respirar me duele todo, 

agua por favor, 

por favor no puedo respirar."

Dos minutos antes de que el policía le retirara la rodilla del cuello de Floyd  este ya había perdido el conocimiento.

Finalmente, leí la noticia, guardo silencio, mi pecho se angustia y se hace pequeño, trato de respirar pero me hace falta el aire, no puedo respirar, ¡me hace falta justicia! ¡nos hace falta justicia!

A Elfego Torres y George Floyd les hizo falta la justicia.

No puedo respirar.

I can't breathe!

I have refused to read and listen to newspaper reports in the past few days. However, they are everywhere; I hear the murmurs, images appear that I quickly move out of my sight.

They talk about an event that requires my attention, but I refuse, I don't want to listen, I don't want to see. I know what is happening, what they are talking about. I have already seen, lived endless times. My mind remembers those notes from scenarios that had happened before in other places, but… Have they been in other places?

A name comes to mind: Elfego Torres - an orchard foreman killed by Roger Thompson, a white male business owner on an argument filled with hatred and racist remarks, over of somebody’s listening to Mexican music at the end of their working day.

Thompson, who was driving by on his way home, about ½ mile ahead from where the music was playing, felt annoyed from the noise and decided to take that matter into his own hands. Starting an argument and threatening the life of Torres,  creating a confrontation where weapons on both sides come up, ending with the life of Elfego Torres.

Elfego's crime: listening to music in high volume.

Murderer's conviction: 18 months 

But he was not the first nor was he the last Latino / Mexican to have lost his life due to racial hatred or police violence in the Columbia Gorge area. 

On May 25, 2020, Derek Chauvin - a white Minneapolis police officer - killed George Floyd, a Black American man. Chauvin for the period of 8 minutes and 46 seconds kept his knee on George Floyd's neck while he repeatedly said: 

"I can’t move,

Moma, moma,

I can't breathe, 

my stomach hurts, my knees, my neck, 

I can't breathe everything hurts, 

please water please,

I can't breathe."

Two minutes before the policeman removed the knee from Floyd's neck, Floyd had already passed out.

Finally, I read the news, I am silent, my chest is getting smaller and smaller, I try to breathe but I need air, I cannot breathe, I need justice! We need justice! 

Elfego Torres and George Floyd lacked justice.

I can't breathe.
