Take Action: Washington Data Center Moratorium

Join the Call for a Three Year Moratorium on Data Centers in Washington!

Big Tech’s AI data centers are sucking up Washington’s water, jeopardizing clean energy goals, and harming communities. Governor Ferguson and the Legislature can put the brakes on the rampant building of new data centers by passing a statewide moratorium. A three year moratorium will buy us the time necessary to develop strong and effective regulations.

Tell your elected officials: Big Tech doesn’t call the shots. Washingtonians demand a three year data center moratorium so that we can examine the impacts of data centers before allowing any more in our state.

Momentum is growing for data center moratoriums. From Seattle to Spokane to Skamania County, communities are passing moratoriums at the local level. Having a longer statewide pause gives time for strong guardrails to be developed and implemented. Join Columbia Riverkeeper: contact the governor and your state legislators and at the form below to let them know you want a three year statewide moratorium on new data centers in Washington.

Join the call for a three year moratorium on data centers in Washington!

Dear Governor Ferguson and (your Washington State Senator and Representatives):

I urge you to support a three year moratorium on data center development in Washington. We must have time to responsibly assess the burden that Big Tech’s additional data centers will create before allowing more of them to be built in our state.

The proliferation of data center proposals and construction in Washington is taking a massive toll on our natural resources, our municipal systems, and our communities. Data center development has gone largely unchecked. The result: Washington is the tenth largest data center market in the U.S. Yet the full economic and environmental impact of data centers remains unknown.

Our water, communities, and climate should come first. We are counting on you to stand up to big tech’s data center explosion and say yes to a three year data center moratorium in Washington. It is critical that we take the time to fully understand the impacts of data centers before allowing more to be built.

Please protect Washingtonians and the precious resources we depend on.
